To mark the begining of New York Fashion Week we asked photographer, filmmaker, and New York native Richard Kernto select this months TV Takeover. Kern’s experimental, provocative, and erotic films came into prominence in the 1980’s. Such films like Thrust in Me, The Right Side of My Brain, and Fingered featured underground artists such as LYDIA LUNCH, Sonic Youth, KEMBRA PFAHLER, DAVID WOJNAROWICZ, HENRY ROLLINS, and more. For his exclusive ten day takeover Kern will be selecting an array on films including young visual artists such as MAGGIE LEE and CHLOE WISE. This takeover also coincides with the release of his forthcoming book Boyfriend Girlfriend published by The Oversea Books in October and the 20th anniversary version of his cult classic New York Girls with a directors cut and never before seen outtakes set to be released by Taschen in 2015. Check out his instagram @richardkernnyc.

“23 year old Chloe Wise moved to NYC a year ago from Montreal. She’s been making webcam and stop motion videos since high school. “For millennials like me, broadcasting oneself is almost second nature, so it feels very fluid to produce video content”. You can see more of Chloe’s work here and @chloewise_ on Instagram.” – Richard Kern

“Since the late 70’s, Michael Smith has been making videos and installations that featured “Mike”, a naive but perpetually optimistic everyman. Mike the artist has good ideas, happily takes career advice from others and is deeply introspective about new things he hears about or discovers. Smith’s work usually only appears in installations but some material can be found here.” – Richard Kern

“Westfield NJ native Maggie Lee shot videos of hardcore / punk shows she’d attend while in high school then moved to NYC in 2005 to study printmaking at Pratt. She continued making videos, first with a blackberry and now with an Iphone. “I went through a phase of trying to make a video everyday really fast without thinking about it too much and to get into the flow”. “TThe Sex Pistols, led by nihilistic word fountain Johnny Rotten, popularized hate, destruction and anarchy with their conceptually perfect album Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. The band imploded on their 1978 tour but John Lydon (Rotten) returned with Public Image Limited (PIL) in response to what he saw as his public’s need for something new to swallow. This 1980 appearance on the Tom Snyder show was the first chance for American fans (myself included) to see and hear Lydon and Keith Lavene talk about this project. It was fun to watch an arrogant and confused Snyder again and again get one-upped by Lydon’s subtle digs and Lavene’s description of what was at... Read More
