bernadette corporation The underground art and fashion collective Bernadette Corporation, founded in New York in 1994, is mostly forgotten by the fashion industry today, but they once encapsulated everything that New York was about. They were the first to connect art and fashion, and streetwear and high fashion, also making indie films and coauthoring a novel, titled Reena Spaulings. They briefly published a fashion fanzine, Made in USA, which shared many of Purple’s contributors. Bernadette Corporation used fashion as a commentary on the corporate mentality that will slowly but surely devastate the New York fashion scene. The collective is still active in the art world and continues to work with its namesake cofounder, Bernadette Van-Huy, a brilliant stylist and art director, and an uncompromising Downtown figure.
