JEAN-PHILIPPE DELHOMME, WRAPPED ARTWORK IN GALLERY COURTYARD, 2018, OIL ON PANEL COURTESY OF THE ARTIST

In LA, it’s the driving that makes me want to paint: the empty crossroads, gas stations, billboards standing in the void, sun-faded commercial buildings, and the variety of architecture, the remains of a long-gone optimism. I stop at a paint and body shop on Wilshire Blvd. and think of Ed Ruscha. At Mission Junction, the auto-parts yards remind me of Chris Burden’s crucifixion. The juxtaposition of signs composes an extended museum show, a broader Broad, a Hammer outside the walls. I like to paint the art gallery spaces and the outdoors as if they are one continuous landscape. I didn’t paint any people in this series, only cars. They are the visual elements of a language that speaks about the space.
