pictures by OLIVIER ZAHM with a portfolio by KARLHEINZ WEINBERGER In 1958, the Swiss photographer Karlheinz Weinberger (1921-2006) — renowned for his homoerotic photographs under the pseudonym -Jim — discovered a microcosm of Zurich teenagers inspired by Elvis Presley, James Dean, and American bikers. He called them “Halbstarke,” half-strong girls and boys who rose out of the mountain landscape to join the circus of rock ‘n’ roll gladiators. They laced up the crotches of their jeans like pirates’ pants and, like legionnaires, slung their hips with buckles emblazoned with their heroes.
