architectural hangover interview by SVEN SCHUMANN photography by HEINZ PETER KNES   Cyprien Gaillard is one of the most sought-after multimedia artists of his generation. Raised between Paris and San Francisco, the 31-year-old Frenchman now lives in Berlin but spends more than half the year traveling, searching for inspiration and adventure in the form of destruction and decay — the remnants of failed utopias. His work ranges from a film of Russian hooligans beating each other to Polaroids of abandoned golf courses and sculptures constructed from the rubble of demolished housing projects. Disinclined to judge the places and subjects he portrays, Cyprien leaves space instead for interpretation, revealing an unexpected beauty in the midst of ruin.
