Chiara Mastroianni

photographed by DOMINIQUE ISSERMAN   Chiara Mastroianni is the daughter Marcelo Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve, a true child of the cinema. When she was only six years old she visited the set of Fellini’s City of Women with her father. But she didn’t consider acting herself until 1993, when her close friend, the actor Melvil Poupaud, convinced her to play the daughter of Deneuve in André Téchiné’s film, Ma Saison Préférée. The success of this film persuaded her to pursue acting as a career. Yet she has always distanced herself from the media and the celebrity game, preferring to work in independent films, with young filmmakers, and to only accept roles that test her talent. As a result, she’s worked with some of the most interesting French directors, including Laetitia Macon, Pascal Thomas, Arnaud Désplechin, Christophe Honoré, Sophie Fillières, and Emmanuelle Bercot.
