Unknown at the time in Tokyo, the massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake in 2011 set off a chain of devastating events – the brutal tsunami which triggered the unprecedented nuclear crisis which struck Japan’s North East coast, a triple melt down at Fukushima nuclear power station. Today the Fukushima reactor is still unstable, three years post disaster, and contaminated water is still leaking. Tepco is struggling to find a solution for hundreds of thousands of tonnes of highly radioactive water. Some of Fukushima’s 200,000-plus nuclear evacuees are now permitted to return to their homes during the day, but radiation levels are still too high for them to make a permanent return.
