Stan Douglas’ new exhibition at David Zwirner features a single channel film recreation of the famed Columbia 30th Street recording studio. Douglas presents a group of musicians improvising together in the studio to create a documentary style fiction of an iconic venue. The artist’s presentation allows the film to function as a continuous dialogue between the musicians rather than a fully formed narrative. This practice allows Doulgas to bring together contemporary ideas through a historical lens. Luanda-Kinshasa is on view through February 22nd 2014 at David Zwirner, 533 West 19th Street, New York.
