For the first time every, a European institution will showcase a comprehensive collection of the American colorist, presenting a selection of 70 paintings produced between the 1930s to ‘60s. Featuring scenes of daily life, including portraits of loved ones and serene landscapes from visits to Maine and Cape Cod, the harmonious colours and simplified shapes have been an inspiration to a long line of abstract expressionist painters, from Mark Rothko to Barnett Newman. In Rotho’s words, Avery was able to celebrate the world around him with a poetry that “penetrated every pore of the canvas to the very last touch of the brush.”
“Milton Avery: American Colorist” is on view now until October 16 at the Royal Academy, Burlington House, London.
