Contemporary visual artist Kutlug Ataman examines the modernization of Turkey in his new multimedia exhibition at Sperone Westwater. Ataman’s film Journey to the Moon is especially engaging in the way it crafts a fictional story interwoven with a documentary style interview of Turkish scholars. Ataman’s films often inhabit this grey area between art, film, reality and fiction. Not content for the viewer to be a passive bystander in his films, Ataman creates active installations. On the first floor, English as a second language projects onto three different walls. The viewer situatated between two young men as the attempt to read poetry in English in this new era of globalization. Mesopotamian Dramaturgies is on view through December 22nd 2012 at Sperone Westwater, 257 Bowery, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
