Concurrent with his Bowery mural installation, Kenny Scharf presents
Naturafutura at Chelsea’s Paul Kasmin Gallery. These images are classic
Scharf combining whimsical characters with exuberant backgrounds. The
vibrant and colorful fantasy worlds are seemingly at odds with the
deeper themes explored by Scharf. While his scenic Brazil studio
served as the initial inspiration for the waterscapes, the underwater
hallucinogenic images also incorporate Scharf’s response to the BP oil
spill. Naturafutura by Kenny Scharf is on view until 26 February at the Paul Kasmin Gallery, 293 Tenth Avenue, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
