Joanna Malinowska’s work merges myth, craft and appropriation to create an environment rife with subverted tradition. A large pile of dirt shipped in from the Yukon and placed in the center of Canada Gallery’s new Broome Street space functions as both a site of performance and new version of Walter de Maria’s Earth Room. Throughout the gallery space, Malinowska acts as an artist and anthropoligist culling North American imagery and investigating its desecration and beauty. A Hawk From a Handsaw is on view through October 20th 2013 at Canada Gallery, 333 Broome Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
