Hans-Christian Lotz presents a series of sliding glass doors leading to nowhere. Their transparency is a deception. Imperfections of shattered glass and scuff marks tie them back to their material. The installation includes motion sensors to activate the doors’ movement when visitors approach. This silent acknowledgment of the viewer speaks loudly in the spacious gallery while thousands of times a day this same architecture is ignored by passing crowds. Lotz explores how even today’s simplest technologies increasingly react to their subjects, predicting their desires, but often runing them into a wall instead of opening a door.
Hans-Christian Lotz’s exhibition will be on view at David Lewis Gallery until April 17.
