Cyprien Gaillard at Gladstone Gallery, New York
Cyprien Gaillard’s first solo exhibition with Gladstone Gallery chronicles the decay of objects and erosion of ideas. Excavator machines placed in the gallery become obsolete in their new environment. Preserved in an inoperatve state, Gaillard’s sculptures suggest the viewer consider the negligence of progress. Upstairs in the gallery, the artist presents back issues of National Geographic with rearranged pages to create a shift in time. The new objects, placed in vitrines, create an aritificial history and suggest the tension between memory and fact.
