Cary Leibowitz’s exhibition with Invisible Exports uses personal musings that verge on the neurotic as a means of social commentary. The pink walls hold canvases of the same color that feature simple, handwritten texts. Each canvas reads like a fragmented diary extract or one sided conversation placed into the context of an art gallery. Leibowitz also plays with history and memory and displays a series of commemorative belt buckles for fictional events. The artist’s career often replies upon absurd situations and unexpected forms to express the unease of navigating through adulthood. Paintings and Belt Buckles is on view through October 13th 2013 at Invisible Exports, 89 Eldridge Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
