Purple is pleased to present Beau Dick & Christophe Brunnquell at Académie Conti curated by Franck Gautherot & Seungduk Kim.
The exhibition showcases Dick’s sculptural masks and Brunnquell’s monochromatic photos. Beau Dick was an Indigenous sculptor whose totemic figures reflect the aesthetics of his native Kwakwaka’wakw culture, while at the same time highlighting contemporary Western influences. Christophe Brunnquell photographs models whose faces are covered with black make-up and distorts them to create strange yet fantastical compositions. The works of both artists are paired up, reconciling opposites with the intention of entrusting the photos’ two-dimensionality with the mission of dialoguing with the masks.
On view now until October 9 2021 at Académie Conti, Vosne-Romanée
