For his first exhibition with Friedrich Petzel in New York, artist Sean Landers
avoids any of his traditional text-based imagery. Instead, he
reintroduces an iconic clown figure from a 1996 painting and creates a
disturbing narrative across the dozen canvases and bronze sculptures in
the gallery. Around the World Alone portrays a solitary clown
struggling to command a boat. The vulnerable clown is an important
motif for Landers and represents his career as an artist and the
psychological stress of one’s work.
Around the World Alone by Sean Landers is on view at Friedrich Petzel, 537 West 22nd Street, New York. Photo and text Juliana Balestin
