Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s “Mysterious Objects at Noon” screening and Q&A tomorrow at the ICA, London

Apichatpong Weerasethakul‘s surreal yet real debut feature Mysterious Objects at Noon is an experimental mix of documentary and fiction that wends its way through the landscapes and mindscapes of rural Thailand. The film was loosely based on the game Exquisite Corpse, originally conceived by the surrealists, wherein the participants of the game take turns to advance a storyline. Mysterious Objects at Noon shows us the director and his crew traveling throughout rural and urban Thailand, picking people at random, presenting them with an audio tape that contains the narrative of a story as told by its previous bearers and asking them to expand upon a story involving a wheelchair-bound young boy and his teacher. The resulting stories are later reenacted by non-professional actors in dramatic recreations of the freely associated narrative strokes supplied. Weerasethakul will be screening his film with a Q&A tomorrow from 8:40pm at the ICA, London.
